Welcome Summer Interns 2022

Meet Our 2022 Interns

SC Builders is excited to have a solid group of interns and it has been great seeing them in action. Each of them is assigned to one or more of our ongoing projects and are encouraged to spend as much time as possible in the field applying what they have learned so far from their studies and learning even more on the job. We know each one has a bright future ahead and it is our privilege to help foster their careers in the construction industry.

In preparation for their time with us, we sat down with each Intern to ask about their backgrounds, passions, and overall perspectives on the industry.

Good luck, Interns! We know you will crush it this Summer.

2022 internsHUMBERTO ANDUAGA

CSU Chico, Class of 2023
Major: Construction Management

What excites/motivates you about the construction industry?

The idea that I can have a hand in something from its very start is what is exciting to me. On the road, I see buildings worked on over time and I think, “How cool to be a part of something like that!” I also know that every project isn’t going to be the same, so that keeps things exciting as well. I’m a sports guy, too, so I am all about teamwork, which motivates me to do well in the construction industry because it is always a team effort.

Tell us about a favorite project you worked on or something cool you learned in school.

My first job as a laborer in Chico was at a power plant. I did a lot of concrete pouring… I mean, a lot! I had no idea what I was doing at first, but after a while, I got the hang of it. Once I felt confident in what I was doing, then I realized I had a passion for Construction Management and that it was something I was going to pursue.

What do you think the future of construction will be?

I think instead of physical operators on jobsites you will be able to control machines from anywhere on a computer for excavating, etc. Technology is the future of not just the industry, but the world!

JACOB GALLEGO

Arizona State University, Class of 2022
Major: Construction Management

Why did you decide to join SC Builders?

I worked with Thomas Barbera (SC Builders Assistant Project Manager) previously and had a good sense of camaraderie with him, so that was the initial appeal. But, on top of that, I like the appeal of a company that is family-oriented so I feel like a member of a family, not just a team.

If you were to work at a firm that made front-page headlines for achieving something impressive, what would you like that achievement to be?

Definitely something having to do with sustainability innovation. It is something I am passionate about when building projects, so it would be great to achieve something with energy conservation on a project that is bio-friendly.

What excites/motivates you about a career in construction?

I like being connected, meaning I love maintaining good relationships with clients. To regularly keep in touch with a client throughout the course of a project to ensure their satisfaction is what I find most rewarding about the whole process.

LOGAN MURPHY

CSU Chico, Class of 2023
Major: Construction Management

Tell me about a favorite project you worked on or something cool you learned in school.

The first project I ever led by myself was building a watch tower in Redding, CA where I’m from. I had the privilege of leading the project through work at the time and it is what spawned my interest in construction. I learned so much, which gave me a leg up when I decided to go to Chico for Construction Management.

Why did you decide to join SC Builders?

It seemed like such a tight-knit culture, which is something I for sure wanted to be a part of. Everyone I met with had such good values and took pride in their work, so I knew I would be able to learn even more from a team with a strong sense of morality when it comes to the job.

If you were to work at a firm that made front-page headlines for achieving something impressive, what would you want that achievement to be?

Giving back to the community in some way. One of my passions aside from construction is helping others, so perhaps something like building a modern shelter for the homeless community. If we could make the news for helping eliminate the housing crisis, that would be amazing.

DAVID NAKANO

Cal Poly, Class of 2024
Major: Construction Management

What sparked your initial interest in construction?

When I was little, I built a treehouse with my grandfather and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had, not only because I got to bond with him, but because it was when I realized I had a passion for building. But, even at that point, it was just something I thought was “fun” – I didn’t realize I could actually make a career out of it. It wasn’t until I got to Cal Poly and enrolled in their program that I realized this is something I could do for the rest of my life.

Why did you decide to join SC Builders?

I wanted to make the move to the Bay Area (I am originally from Southern California). But ultimately what attracted me to SC Builders was that I knew I would be learning hands-on in the field with a good backbone to support me. Even more so, I am very interested in their Life Science market sector, so I am excited to explore that here!

What do you think will be the future of construction?

It should become a lot “greener,” in my opinion. But I know there will be much more innovation with technology. For instance, I think most buildings will have more touchscreens for reception and overall access. After COVID, I think the concept of “openness” will become much more desired as well.

JEROME LUMICAO

CSU Chico, Class of 2023
Major: Construction Management

Tell me about a favorite project you worked on or something cool you learned in school.

Via CSU Chico’s Sketch Up program, I worked on houses and storefronts, which I loved doing. But I am excited to work in commercial construction now. I am interested in the different finishes on buildings and the structural guidelines. I’m excited to learn new things now that I’m here at SC Builders!

What do you think will be the future of construction?

Technology for surveying, without a doubt. We are constantly striving to make things more precise in the industry, and the technology is what is going to keep us innovating.

What are some of your hobbies?

I love going to the beach or going on hikes near the water as well. But, in general, I love to spend time with my family and friends.

BLAKE HADLEY

Cal Poly, Class of 2023
Major: Construction Management

What excites/motivates you about a career in construction?

I actually started college as a Microbiology major (if you can believe it), but my roommate at the time was in Construction Management and I helped him with a few projects, which piqued my curiosity about the industry. So from that point, I decided to change my major to CM as well because I love seeing the fruits of my labor at a project’s completion.

Why did you decide to join SC Builders?

The opportunity for growth was there, so I decided to take the leap and join the team. Additionally, SC Builders is in the hub of Silicon Valley and San Francisco, so I knew I would have my work cut out for me in terms of working on projects for major clients.

What are some of your hobbies?

I recently became a huge fan of golf, especially after COVID with all the downtime. I enjoy my time outdoors and try to get to the beach whenever I can, too. I also enjoy watching TV shows and movies to close out my day.
